Today

I saw
the sea
(as I glanced
to my right
at the wheel
driving home
from Oxnard)
as if it were
all one thing
and alive

it there
me in the car
in my life
which will end
as it continues
as the planet
and the universe
does

it had to do
with being
this age
and being
happy
with life
as a phenom-
onon
not abstract
but not so
personal
as it was

my wrist watch
telling
the same time
as anybody's
in this
time zone
I got a
glimpse
of being
alive and

dead at the
same time
the ocean and sky
a continuum
in which I too
for the moment
exist
