Thoughts at 3 A.M.
Will you ever open your eyes and ask me
one last time
Will you ever look up into the turquoise sky
and marvel at its eternity
Will you ever walk this path again
in the cold breeze
under the dark shade of fire-colored trees
Will you ever stand on the top of the cliff
and look down at the ocean, the valley, the mountains, and the city
this empire we so willingly built
and feel how small you are
Will you ever speak the words
that once graced your beautiful lips so elegantly
but now leave them a barren desert
waiting for a sign of life to bring it hope
Will you ever get up and keep going
and continue down the road that you have chosen for yourself
resolving to press on until the task is complete
instead of choosing to lay down and die
Will you ever feel that fire igniting within your soul
that tells you incessantly to give peace a chance
that not all lies have to be lived
that nothing good comes from hatred
Will you ever remember
how closely we were tied together
and how slowly that knot became undone
loosening like our grasp on the truth
falling apart like the world around us
Will you ever
open your eyes
Will you ever
give love a chance
